About GACA|
The German American Citizens Association of Kansas City (GACA) is one of Kansas City's original German Clubs that was founded in 1955 by a group of German immigrants. The By-Laws state: "Purpose. The German American Citizens Associations is organized for charitable, educational and social purposes; for promotion of the German heritage, language and culture in a friendly, social environment." GACA hosts dance parties year round with several hours of German and popular dance music usually performed by a local band. These dances often have a theme such as Fasching, Maifest, Oktoberfest, Weinfest or New Years Eve. In the summer the Club has a Picnic and Schuetzenfest for members and guests. The Club also takes part in the annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival, which is sponsored by the City of Kansas City, MO in August. Another favorite is the annual Children's Christmas Party where the children are encouraged to sing or display a special talent. This event is visited by Sankt Nikolaus and his bag of stockings filled with surprises. From time to time the GACA sponsors a visit by groups or bands from Germany who come to share their talents and experience America. For the ladies, the Ladies Auxiliary meets monthly to socialize, as well as plan and conduct fundraisers for charitable contributions to Truman Medical Center East. It meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month. For any singers, the Liederkranz Singers are always looking for new voices, of all ranges and talents.
For any dancers, the Blautaler Schuhplattlers, an affiliated group, welcome anyone interested in taking up German folk dancing. Officers are elected at the annual General Membership Meeting in November. The President chairs monthly Board meetings to conduct the business of the Club. These Board meetings are open to all members. A newsletter is sent by mail to all members to keep them informed of club events and other matters of interest. Annual membership dues are $25.00 per family and $20.00 for singles. |
